In-triguing Enough

When we redesigned our print-issue Table of Contents page we found we needed an unobtrusive way of differentiating the various online extras listed. Headlines were too much, so instead we devised a bolded lead-in phrase (there’s probably a term for it) to signal each item. And then I had to write seven of them. The Table of Contents is pretty much the last thing we do, print-wise, and by that stage I’m all out of words. “In retrospect.” I wrote. “In detail.” “In her own words.” Oh no. I was stuck in a groove. Repetitive, humdrum – unless. Unless I owned it. “In conversation.” “In hindsight.” What a lot of useful phrases there are that star this tiny preposition! In perspective, in love, in might and majesty, in too deep, in a nutshell, in class, in dubious battle, in all shapes and sizes, in a minute, in the nick of time, in their own world, in step, in a case in point, in line, in shape, in good order, in his cups, in the cold light of day, in all truth, in 1 John 4:16 … In all seriousness, I’m not sure I’ve had enough fun with this next issue’s crop, just [...]
